I never drain the oil when it's hot. Don't have to worry about getting burned as a result.😉
Blackstone still gives me good results.
Heck, we have 0W cold oil. Why would it have to be hot when you drain it?

The same reason I let it drip for hours after I pull the plug out, the lower the viscosity, the more that will come out.

Interesting theory, it aligns with my own.
If my car sat just sat for a day, two, three, seven, or whatever, everything that is goingto drain down to the oil pan, has.
So then i drain it.
Then i pour in a quart of clean oil with the plug still out, and let it flush out even more.
Then i usually go do something else for a while, after removing the filter, and leave the plug out.
Let it drip for a half hour, or hour.
Then come back, install new filter, plug, and refillwith oil.

Why start it up, got for a little drive, then change it. You have pumped all that oil back throughout the entire engine, that just spent a day, or days draining to the pan.
Always seemed illogical to me, unless i was going to let it sit there again with the plug out for days.

Yeh, I let it drip for a few minutes. When I don't see a steady drip every few seconds it's fine to plug it back up. But I change my oil about every 3k miles so there's lots of cushion there.

You saw the mileage on my oil changes in the reports?

I did not originally. I do now. So, at this point let's just all acknowledge you're a little obsessive.

I was proud of myself for going a full year with this last change instead of the 6 months that I was thinking...

Great info @BULL as I've wondered about this very thing. I don't sample every oil change but I do occasionally just to see how things look. I'm going to do some checking here soon now that I've been running E85 for a while as people say you're supposed to change the oil more frequently, but I'm a skeptic about that ;) As you say, test :)

As for changing the oil when hot vs cold, it probably doesn't make any difference if you're just changing the oil, although I've always done it hot. If you're having the oil sampled the thought is that more of whatever may have been in the oil would be suspended and a better representation in the sample analyzed, but looking at Bull's results I'd question that now.

P.S. Bull, you need to enjoy that car more life's short! :)

Thanks guys, I'm working on my "issues", but it's a battle... : )

And yes, I do need to get out in the car more... : (

I had every intention of getting out to HPR a couple of times this year and it just didn't happen.

Also, for those that get the vacuum pump, you can't get the 1/4" tube all the way down the 6.2L dipstick hole. There is a reduction in diameter at the bottom of the dipstick tube that prevents the 1/4" tube from making it into the oil in the pan.

What I did was get some tube that fit the I.D. of the 1/4" tube, which was a tight fit, and used a two piece arrangement. You need the 1/4" tube up at the top to seal against the vacuum pump. (You might be able to get the vacuum pump seal to squish down on the smaller tube, but I didn't want to try.)

The tube I got from McMaster:
McMaster 8359K13

Replacement 1/4" tube from Amazon:
1/4" (or 6mm) O.D. tube

So you end up with the smaller tube in the dipstick tube, and a stretch/friction fit between the two tube sizes just above the dipstick tube, and then the 1/4" tube in the vacuum pump.

I'm not planning on reusing the tube as I don't want the oil left in the tube to contaminate the next sample.

Was thinking about this while trying to get to sleep last night.

I wonder what the process is at the lab once they receive the sample? I mean, you go thru all this trouble to get a consistent and most accurate sample... but I wonder if they just pour what they need for the analysis from the top of the bottle run that?

(and yes...I need another hobby)

So some of the numbers above vary by small percentages, but for example, the viscosity and TBN seems like there is more than a small variance.

However I also saw in another report for an unknown person where Blackstone stated that the TBN was not a linear scale...:unsure::unsure:
