School me on the difference between 4WD vs AWD.

Succinctly, if your vehicle has an option for 2Wheel or 4Wheel and a High and Low range option, it's a 4WD.

If that doesn't apply, and your vehicle drives all 4 tires, then you you have AWD.

You left out the full-time 4WD vehicles, most of which used the NP203 transfer case, and many with Quadra-Trac. The center differential, or lack thereof, is indicative of which kind it is, but doesn't differentiate between full-time and AWD.

So my son has a 2013 JGC Overland. He asked me if it was AWD or 4x4. Pretty sure it has the Hemi with Quadra II set up with a 4x4 low option. But I dont see a 4x4 high option so im confused. Is that full time 4x4 or is it some kind of selectable awd?

This is the difference. 4 low with electronically locking front and rear diffs. This is my wagon at Rausch Creek Offroad park in PA
