I don't go to the drag strip but I do rollrace some and general hooning around. I'm thinking the 2.62 ratio is the one I should choose, BUT I'd like some input anyway.

Is the 3.09 a "must have" or will I be happier with the 2.62?

For "hooning around" i would want the 3.09s
But i would think for roll racing the 2.62s would be better

with 800hp and 8 speeds in the transmission, i don't think the difference is noticeable unless on a track

I found the 309s to be more fun on the street.

309. You won’t regret it.

Looks like I might have made a mistake.

I thought I built a 2020 on Dodge.com, but it must have been a 2019. 2019 has the 3.09 gear ratio option on the site, 2020 doesn't show it available... Maybe I won't have a choice in the matter.

I don't race... period, so I would go with 2.62s. If you want more low-end response, put the A8 in manual shift mode and use the RPM curves. More than enough :)

It's a lot cheaper to have the car built with it than to add it later fwiw.

I have the 2.62s and street tires are a joke with them so I daily with drag radiaols and the car is super quick, but I can't help but to wonder what it would feel like with 3.09s? I'll probably be adding them next year. I just had my dealer check and right now the 3.09 is not available to purchase.

I have 3.09's and like them. For those that say 2.62's are better for roll racing.... wouldn't that depend on what mph you're hitting at? At 35-40 mph and again at 55-60 the 3.09 is going to crush you into the seat. On the other hand 40-45mph or 65-70mph will likely hit stonger with the 2.62. They will both have their sweet spots.... As others have mentioned, it's an 8 speed... not much to complain about.

I can't comment on which would be better for either situation with the torque these engines make..... getting the power to the ground with traction from a dead stop is near impossible with either one....like the saying goes - spinning ain't winning!

Now - IF you have the ultimate drag tire/suspension setup AND you're a very experienced 1/4 mile drag racer - THEN you should get better 60' times with the 3.09's. I think either will be a wash from a roll...although aside from the drag strip, the 2.62 should be faster on the very top end if you have a lot of room though....

2020 it should be an option. I went on there and did a mock build and I'm pretty sure it was an option. I'll double check.
Edit: funny now I don't see it...

That may also be untrue. Clearly the 2.62 would allow the car to have a higher top speed but there is one little variable that you must remember... drag. If the 3.09 is in the sweet spot of the torque curve it is also possible that the 2.62 does not have the ability to reach the same said sweet spot and may actually have a lower top speed due to drag. This could go either way. Anyone know which gear Dodge used for its advertised top speed?

I think the 3.09 gears come with the better drive shaft used on the Demon, all other 2.62 HC & RE HC carry same part number. Driveshaft alone is nearly $1000 if you choose to upgrade later.

I would go 3.09

Pretty sure the 2020s come standard with the 3.09 gears. If I read it right it is Dodge's thinning out of inventory. No benefit to carrying both gear sets when just one works fine.

I had 3.09s and went back to 2.62s. The 3.09s are great around town for just normal driving, however when you really get down on it, the gears just overwhelm the tires.

If I remember right it was on Facebook, Dodge was unloading differentials at discounted price. Guessing it is was an overstock issue. After a quick search I cannot find them for sale right now - so this may just qualify as hearsay.

I read alot about 3.09s breaking at the strip, so I went 2.62s and will be 900hp on very sticky tires.

I heard two things about the 3:09's. Have no real-world experience myself (have 2:62's and car's not even broken in). One thing, they make noise. The other is, when you let fly at max rpm the computer can't keep up with the rpm climb and the 1 -2 shift gets a little janky. DK how true these things are, but do know for a fact some drag racers have gone back to 2:62 from 3:09.
