My wimpy 200HP 3.7L V6 from Dodge has a keyway on the crank... and all it turns is accessories.

I know of 2 personally that spun the crank pulley on stock cars. Both required new motors. Mike from OST has reported several with crank pulleys that had moved on the crank stock as well.

I'm not sure if things have improved over the years, but at least up to 2017 models I always recommended pinning the crank even stock. I agree it is easy, but can be stressful praying the bit doesn't break. I recommend a cobalt bit and cutting oil. That made quick work on mine. You'll also need a giant torque wrench and some muscles to get the new crank pulley to specified torque plus degrees.
Mine is a 2017. How does mine differ from the early models that you recommended pinning the crank on?

I can't say for certain. I just know we heard of crank pulleys spinning on cranks, and then we didn't. Dodge made incremental but non-advertised changes to these cars over the years. One of which was the crank pulley bolt torque value going from a set amount in ft/lbs to a ft/lbs + a set amount of degrees of rotation and a revised crank pulley bolt.

I followed Speedys vids to the word and no probs! Stressful in not breaking the bit, and getting the torque value a bit of a chore, but all done. Stock power here btw with no plans to add at this time. Thanks Speedy!!!

Yeah a popular vendor claimed that they had seen hundreds of stock cars with spun crank pulleys but couldn’t provide me with the location of all of the “bad motors”… out of hundreds they should have had at least a couple.

Btw, the only thing it’ll do is hurt the surface of the crank or back into the seal. This isn’t the equivalent of an interference engine timing belt going.you’re not going to blow up your engine if the crank pulley slips.

People hear spinning the crank pulley and I guess think about spinning a bearing

Depends how badly it spins. Just occasionally slipping a little might not do any damage. But I know of at least one that spun completely and grenaded the whole thing. It takes 80HP to spin the SC. If it gives out at WOT it's going to over rev...

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone doing that with an auto car. Could be wrong. Not with these anyway. That happened to a hellcat? Was it tuned?

I hit the rev limiter this weekend because my transmission didn’t do the 2-3 shift. Have heard of manual cars in general having the potential to over rev, but not autos

If the crank pulley spins badly enough, it wipes out the crank snout, and makes it unusable. Because that’s a friction fit, it won’t be able to hold a pulley. Of course, you could probably pin it to stop that from happening.

Clutched pulley, no need for it stock
Is that why we heard about stock engines getting replaced because the harmonic balancer spun on the crank ? Didn't they think the 70 hp to spin the supercharger wasn't going to take a toll on the balancer pulley ? Instead they relied on a diamond crush washer to keep it from spinning.

Yes - the dealers would just replace the engine rather than attempt any lower level repair is what I recall hearing...
