The V6 is available, but I don't want it! Try towing with a V6, you get no-where fast.
Towing slowly with a 1500 is not a bad idea, regardless of what engine it has..

I have ordered a 2023 Ram Classic and the 5.7 Hemi is on restriction. Is there no end of the stupidity from car manufacturers? The V6 is available, but I don't want it! Try towing with a V6, you get no-where fast. If I don't get the VIN, soon, I will be looking elsewhere. I've owned many Rams, but if Dodge continues, I will look at the competitors...
Good luck.

My 1500 was fine as long as the trailer weight was OK.

Mine have not been fine, but that could be because my balls aren't big enough.

Or, that I've looked at the size of the brakes and other chassis components. Possibly also because there's no way not to notice even an empty trailer back there, wanting to make itself known. And succeeding.

I may drive like an idiot, but when towing I really like a heavy and long wheelbase tow vehicle. Pulling a gooseneck.

After driving CDL class A commercial vehicles for just shy of ten years....logging well over a million accident free miles in every conceivable weather condition in the North East...I know a thing or 2 about towing....now all these years later I push the limits of towing my 18ft enclosed motorcycle trailer with my Ram 1500...my last Ram was a 2500...it rode like a truck..(much better for towing..) my 1500 limited..rides like a Bently...will never go back to a 2500

A '14-up 2500 rides about like a 1500, especially with the optional rear air suspension. At least if the tire pressures are correct for the low (or no) load.

And you probably know how the second trailer wiggles around back there when pulling doubles, regardless of the size of the tractor. Well, that's how I feel when pulling a single trailer with a 1500, even when it's empty. I don't like feeling it, or seeing it in the mirrors.

Granted, I do a lot of sketchy stuff, but risking things by towing with a 1/2-ton is not one of them.

Never pulled doubles...(those guys earn their pay in the winter up here)..my 2500 was a MY 18...(no air suspension)...relative to the 1500 the ride was harsh...I log 45000 a yr on my DD trucks...get a new one every 3 yrs...my friend has a new 3/4 Denali..rides way better than the Ram...I'm just not a GM guy...not yet @ least...

Yes, I'd say so. They tend to take the unrealistic J2807 test numbers and run with them.

I've seen some press photos where whoever pieced them together had no clue what things weigh in real life. The worst was a load of lumber behind a Ram 3500, which realistically should've been hooked to a Class 8.

Another was a Gladiator pulling something (an older Wagoneer maybe?) where the actual sizes of the two were hopelessly off, making the Gladiator look quite large.

At least they did show some squat on the Durango in the "photo" you posted, but in real life that load is probably right on the limit for a Durango...if equipped with a weight distributing hitch. In which case it wouldn't squat.

And being able to use a WD hitch is about the only redeeming factor for a bumper pull trailer, I think.

And what tire pressures were you running? With the as-delivered 80 psi in the back the ride quality suffers big time.

I regularly load pallets of flour in the back (2500lbs.)..short city hauls..yeah I always ran the recommended 80psi

Just messin' witcha. I also did some sketchy towing while younger cuz I couldn't afford the right equipment and all precious $ went into the race car(s). Almost lost it on two different occasions towing to Firebird on I-10, it's a miracle I and the load escaped unscathed both times. 3600+lb big block Nova on friend's borrowed all steel open trailer, towing behind my '78 Impala 4-door with a full trunk full of tools and equipment - must have really been a sight to behold !

And then first enclosed race trailer 28' (empty) behind my 1/2-ton Suburban - that thing was swaying all over the place and just about jacknifed. Now about that thing they call a sway control LOL..

Now that I am in downsize mode, one reason I got the Durango is that I didn't want to be left with no options to tow something if necessary. If I ever get another trailer, it will be an all-aluminum open and pulling a heavy beast like one of our Mopars even then would be a bit white knuckle, and would not want to do it for anything long distance...

I have an 2018 Ram 1500, equipped for towing, about 10,000 wt. max. My trailer is a 20' enclosed (3350 wt.) and a SC/Rambler (3400 wt). The last 20+ years, I had no problem with Ram 1500 trucks towing, but the 11 - 12 mpg, sucks...

That 1 had 3.92 gears, posi and trailer tow package. I got an enclosed 28' and it would of been overwhelmed.

I agree with you, my 20' trailer is the limit. I always get the best tow package, with gears, mirrors, posi, controller and anti-spin. Your 28' trailer is a "lot-of-trailer" and your vehicle, being towed, is much heavier, than my car.

Well, then you shouldn't blame the 2500 for the bad ride quality. And it probably wouldn't be much better in a 1500 with that load in the bed, as it would be on the bump stops.

I learned to really appreciate active sway control (Reese and Husky) during my 1,000-mile "commute" every two weeks.

That was with a Ram 2500 and a 16' enclosed trailer. Ironically the anti sway was most appreciated on the return trips, when the trailer was empty, and passing tractor trailers would make the trailer try to steer me into the tractor.

The WD hitch obviously helped plant the 2500 better (steering and stopping), and I didn't need to adjust the headlights quite as much for each trip.

Anyway, it's all simple physics, and in your case the generous overhang on the Suburban didn't exactly help. It's hard to describe how I like it to feel when towing, but basically I want the extra towed weight to be the only noticeable difference.

A good WD hitch with active anti sway goes a long way towards that goal, but is still far from perfect I think. The trailer will still affect the tow vehicle quite a bit. That's why I gave up on bumper pulls.

Gooseneck trailers are an entirely different experience. They mostly just follow nicely, with the weight being the one thing that affects the tow vehicle. Plus, they protect what's on the trailer quite well, unlike a bumper pull flatbed. DSCN1829.JPG DSCN2124.JPG DSCN2158.JPG

Well, the 2500 is only weight limited on paper, thanks to the max 10K GVWR, but a 1500 really doesn't have any actual load carrying capability to speak of.
