Called the local dealership - those T30 screws are not serviceable, so they won't sell them to me??? Strange. Anyway, off to HD and Lowe's this afternoon to see what I can find.

let me know what size that screw is. i may have some lying around here. we use something similar for rack mounting networking equipment. The ones I have will have a torx head on them. I have 2 different sizes.

Looks like what I have are T30 head, M6x1.0 thread. I checked them with the thread guages in my tap/die set.

Threaded part of screw measure out to slightly over 16mm. I checked it with the depth gauge part of the calipers but couldn't hold it all and take the pic at the same time.


OAL of screw measures out to almost 21mm

and guess what is conveniently missing, skipping from #7 to #13 ...

If he can use the ones I have, I'll put a few in an envelope and send them to him. Still waiting to hear what size he needs. If it turns out that I have the ones he needs, then they'll be easy to find through other channels because we get these from regular places like Grainger and MSC, and Fastenal.

Does that look like enough meat to tap it?

I would run a tap through that. The worst that can happen is that you have to drill it out and put a threaded insert in it.

I'd love to hear the reasoning around not selling the bolt. If they're worried about attempts at warranty claims after you've taken the thing apart I think there are plenty of other ways to catch that.

I also picked up a tap and die set, I'm going try to use that to clean out the threads of the screw and the lid tonight.

@Stormtrooper1320 , I let you know about the screws you have. I've never had to get threaded insets before, should I be able to get them at home depot type place or better online?

Depending on the type of threaded insert, you should be able to find them at home depot or lowes, you'll just have to see what kind they have.

I have used the Heli-coil type on aluminum intakes before and they hold really well since most of those bolts aren't torqued to a high amount. The Heli-coil ones typically come in a kit that has the inserts, the install tool, etc. You can get the kit for the specific size that you need.

Amazon or auto parts stores too should have that size kit.

My suggestion:

1. Chase the tapped hole, get a new screw (I would not reuse that same screw, who knows if it is off and the cause) and see it if it’ll torque to spec. If so, you are good.

1a. If it holds torque spec, you can remove it, clean the screw and tapped hole with carb cleaner and put blue Loctite on it.

2. If it doesn’t hold spec torque then consider an insert or next size. Helicoils are good but require a special tool kit. The insert Bull suggested is really good as long as you have the wall thickness which looks ok. If you tap to next size, you will have one odd screw, it may be noticeable, functionally fine but cosmetically off.

It sucks that the factory f’d this up but it is recoverable.

Alright, cleaned the threads on the screw. Quite a buit of material came off. See here.


Then, using this

I chased the tapped hole. Screw goes in fine, a little loose at the beginning, due to lost material, I'd assume, then gets tighter.

I wiped up the shavings with a microfiber towel, but still need to clean with carb cleaner. I picked up some M6x1.0 20mm Phillips screws while at HD, I'll run one of those through itvas well. Will probably just use one of those instead of the original, it's all covered by the covers anyway.

Once it's all cleaned out, I'll see if it holds, if not I'll look into an insert or drilling and tapping for 7mm.
