- 2018 Demon; 2006 Viper (Arrow)
Ok, I know this is maybe not the correct venue for this post...BUT...it is a HP Mopar and it's awesome. Hoping that's enough to keep the HCF police away.
So I am posting some pics and have some questions for those who know these cars. To me, the 3rd gen is the best looking. I have respect for all Vipers but to me the 1st gen are a bit cartoonish and don't do it for me. I also wanted at least 500hp. That left Gens 3-5. Mny of the Gen 4-5s received the over-the-top wings and were very track-oriented (almost to the detriment of street drivability in some cases). Still awesome cars but not my bag (baby). So call me crazy (wouldn't be the 1st time) but I think the designers NAILED it on the 3rd gen. Plus, I'm a coupe guy so it had to be 2006 (2003-05 were all roadsters). Within the 2006 MY, for me it had to be the one-off VOI.9s that received the stone white, blue stripe treatment. Only 100 cars were built this way. (Full disclosure: I am also a big Pontiac guy who just happened to own a '69 RA IV TA, so I might be biased!)
Anyhow, the VOI.9s are interesting since they were at the very end of the 2006 model run and ended Gen 3. Due to production issues (and a lack of sales), Dodge decided to build zero Vipers in 2007 as they prepped for the 1st Gen 4 run in 2008. In order to juice up final sales for Gen 3, Dodge offered two optional packages only available for the VOI.9 (three if you consider special delivery/pickup in Vegas an option). Anyhow, the first VOI9 option was a giant Aero wing. The 1st ever on a Viper if I am not mistaken. A company named Prefix built 16 such cars. They are fully documented with all Vin's known. Interestingly, one of the 16 sold for 143K on BaT a few months ago. A second (less visible but more potent) option was the Mopar Performance Option. This added significant horsepower to the stock 510hp V-10. A company called "Arrow" built/modified these cars for Dodge. The word is only 9 were built. I say "word" since no comprehensive list of the Vins is published anywhere that I could find. This is largely due to the unusual fact that the original owner (not Dodge or the dealership) directly paid Arrow for these modifications while the car was still being built at the foundry. Those 9 special cars got a hotter cam, Belanger headers, full exhaust, valves and springs, swing arm pick-up, and a modified ECU. Dodge pulled the engine, shipped it to Arrow who reworked it, and then it was sent back to Dodge for re-install, then finally shipped to the purchasing Dealership. Basically, the Arrow VOI.9s had a Comp Coupe engine in an SRT-10. I will dyno it soon but I'm thinking it has to have at least 650hp with those mods, possibly a bit more especially since Arrow had a Stage II option for Gen 4 that basically mimicked these add-ons and claimed 150hp.
This is definitely one of those 9. It was under MSO though 2019 and only has 3075 miles today. It sounds and pulls better/harder than any Viper (any Gen) I've heard or driven. I had forgotten just how much I miss a manual HP car. In short, I am in love. So, I thought I would share.
PS I just found the original owner's information and I plan on contacting him to see if he saved any of the original paperwork (between him and Arrow). If anyone knows of any other online documentation for the 9 Arrow VOI.9 Vipers, please ping me since I would definitely be interested. Paperwork or not though, this car is definitely one of the few that were built back in 2006 and I am extremely excited to be its new owner!
